Restore and return our Odessa Brown Clinic now! This is not the clinic the community built. Seattle Children’s Hospital has kidnapped our community asset and lifeline. Because of Children’s Hospital, our beloved clinic on Yesler is closed! The ongoing blatant racism, disgrace, and disregard for the well-being of the African-American community will no longer be tolerated. At a time when we need health services the most, you’ve tried to close the doors on us, but we will not let you. Odessa Brown does not belong to Children’s Hospital, it belongs to the community. We have had enough. It is time to restore and return Odessa Brown back to the community. #RestoreandReturnOdessaBrown

OPINION: ODESSA BROWN AND THE TORCH OF DIGNITY

Odessa Brown, the namesake of a pediatric clinic in Seattle, would have had her birthday on April 30. She was born in 1920 and died in 1969, too young by any measure. She had leukemia, and I think it’s fair to add that racism accelerated her passing. It is just as true today as it was in the 1960s: Black women and men are more likely to have more advanced cancers at diagnosis and are more likely to die from them than white Americans with similar cancers. The Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic opened more than 50 years ago in its original home in the Central District. That first location on East Spruce Street was the fruit of Ms. Odessa Brown’s vision that no child should be denied health care because of their race. Read more>
